Mumbai gears up to win the ICC Cricket World Cup, and for Sachin Tendulkar

As you traverse through the roads of Mumbai, you see hoardings with Sachin Tendulkar’s picture and a sentence that reads, ‘Win the World Cup for Sachin Tendulkar’. Everyone knows the Cricket World Cup 2011 has kicked off in the subcontinent and that this could well be the Little Master’s last one. No wonder then, that the city is gearing up to do everything to make it a tribute not just to the game, but to the man who gave the country much to cheer about for 20 years.

Like festivals, cricket too is a community activity and Mumbai’s hospitality addresses never forget that. At the heart of the city, Bandra’s popular hangout Bonobo is planning to welcome cricket fans and India supporters for a fun-filled frenzy. “We intend to screen all India matches and a few other interesting ones. To go with the excitement are special discounts on beer and cocktail pitchers and a 50 per cent discount if patrons win the toss against the Bonobo barman,” says Anup Gandhi, a partner at the restaurant. To set the ambience, Gandhi and his team has done up the place with India flags, face-painting and merchandise. Hotels aren’t too far behind either at partaking in the revelry. The bar at Hotel Intercontinental The Lalit in Andheri, Beluga, has a new menu to suit the sporty mood with special offers on drinks and beers running through the day, between noon and midnight for all matches.

New LG P999 3G phone gets Bluetooth, Wi-Fi listing - New LG P999 3G phone

The LG-P999 smartphone model must've been tested along side the Optimus 2X LG-P990, Optimus Black LG-P970 and Optimus 3D LGP920 smartphones. At the Bluetooth SIG listing, the LG handset is listed with model number LG-P999 and carries a description - LG 3G Mobile Phone. This handset will have Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and as the description suggests would support 3G network. It is listed as an end product so we can expect LG to show it any time soon.

Bluetooth Listing

Same LG smartphone had recieved Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n certification four months back in October 2010. Don't get confused for the LG-P999DW is the same model with some region specific variations may be.

Wi-Fi Listing

Ellis Markov developed Android App - GPUBench OpenGL ES 2.0 Benchmark scores list has the LG-P999 at fifth place while LG-P990 aka Optimus 2X tops the charts. So we can assume the the LG-P999 would have powerful GPU and a dual-core CPU. Don't go by the scores for this OpenGL benchmarching app does give vast performance difference between devices that aren't that bad. For instance, Samsung Galaxy S and iPhone 4 despite of having top of the line GPUs housed struggle with low scores. It's quite possible the RFS Filesystem in Galaxy S and the iOS filesystem would be the reason for low OpenGL scores. Clearly Samsung Galaxy S scores less than it's potential with the Quadrant tests. However, the LG handset's listing is enough evidence that it's being tested out there.

GPU Benchmark

Probably LG might be working on a high-end 3G smartphone running Android for countries including India that won't have 4G or LTE cellular networks till at least 2-3 years.

Philips SHL5001 Headphones Review - Best Latest philips shl5001

The Philips SHL5001 are a pair of headphones aimed at the budget segment. Priced at just Rs. 1,099, the headphones do offer a lot for the price. Read on to find out more.

The SHL5001 have a simple over-the-head design. They have a nice thick headband with soft padding underneath. The headband are adjustable with a smooth sliding design and even have markings that make it easy to remember at what length you set it the last time.

The speakers are covered in a soft padding and are very comfortable on the ears. The speaker backs are completely sealed, which may be good for preventing sound leakage but not so much for audio quality. The speakers rotate so you can make them flat with the headband, making them easier to pack in a bag. Unfortunately, that's how much you can contract them. Also, the headphones don't come with a carry case. Each of the speakers have a cable coming out of it, which then unites some way down and then terminates in a 3.5mm jack.

Philips SHL5001

The headphones we tested came in an orange and brown color combination. They are also available in red and black (SHL5000), green and silver (SHL5002), and silver and black (SHL5003).

The audio quality of the headphones was a bit of a hit and miss affair. On one hand we were pleased that it does not sound as bad as one would expect a headphone to do in this price range. On the other hand they aren't particularly great either. Generally the sound from these headphones is very pleasing. Non-audiophile folks probably won't be able to pick up any problems with the sound at all. However, those who have heard better, will be.

The headphones lack clarity in sound. The sound has a dullness to it that will be immediate to anyone who is used to more expensive stuff. Nothing stands out in particular and the speakers sound as if they are firing through a thin barrier that is robbing them of their clarity.

The bass is a bit hollow. It is warm and decently punchy, but give it something deeper and it flounders. It does handle mid-bass well but increase the volume and you start hearing distortion in the bass. The mid-range is sufficiently intense but lacks clarity and definition. The high-end suffers from a similar problem, where you are unable to distinguish between different notes. Overly complicated compositions with multiple instruments also sound muddy and indistinct.

Like I mentioned before, all this would be apparent to only those who have heard better quality sound. But those who haven't would have very little to complain about, until they hear something better. Even if you have heard better quality sound, you shouldn't really expect a lot at this price point.

What the Philips SHL5001 delivers at Rs. 1,099 is something many other fail to. It may not be the best sounding headphones out there but for the price they are good value for money and can make an excellent second pair of headphones for, say, movies and gaming.
